A New Twist

Though not a new piece to the Bernhardt line, the Amri lounge chair is still a favorite. Introduced in Fall 2010 at the London Design Festival, Amri makes a statement with its pitched arms and inviting presence. Artist, and more recent designer, Jephson Robb, is known for his works of public art throughout Europe. He designed the Amri lounge with the goal of making a contemporary chair look and feel comfortable.

Amri is available in both a stationary and swivel version. We recently acquired the swivel version in our showroom, and with its low profile and easy sit its a welcome addition to our space. Take a Pause... for the New Year

Happy New Year everyone! With the hectic holiday season behind us and 2012 officially underway, now is the time to take a pause, refresh and look forward to the new. What better way to do that than with new furniture? Bernhardt recently introduced the aforementioned Pause bench to its growing line of bench seating. Designed by Jenn Kuca, from the Art Center College of Design, the Pause bench is simple in styling and free of fuss. Constructed from solid maple, the bench comes to life when accented with a contrasting welt and cushion. Upholstery options for the seat include fabric and leather. Available now for order!

Serif Table

This week I'm bringing to you two more winning pieces from the Art Center College of Design, the multipurpose Serif and Story tables. The Serif table was designed by Ini Archibong, John Phillips and Stephanie Rose Stalker, students from the Art Center, as part of an ongoing collaboration with the school.

The Serif is a folding table system designed for conference rooms, training areas and anywhere else you could use a bit more flexibility. With its sculpted leg made from polished aluminum, the designers succeeded in making a piece that is just as beautiful as it is functional. It comes with a wide variety of finish and sizing selections with power and data options available as well.

Not to be outdone, students Albert Lee, Zorine Pooladian and Daniel Yorba created the Story, an elegantly simple yet highly functional table available in both bar and table heights with either fixed or folding tops. Both tables are ready to order.

Double Dutch

This September, Bernhardt Design will be exhibiting at the London Design Festival for the second time. They will be showcasing the talents of design duo and couple Kiki van Eijk and Joost van Bleiswijk. These Dutch designers have created a new collection for Bernhardt titled "Workshop," which will be making its international debut at LDF 2011. Check out the photos below taken by artist Nienke Klunder who previously collaborated with Jamie Hayon for Bernhardt:

Though the pair shares a studio space, they are well known for their individual efforts. Kiki finds influence in the nostalgic and places importance on making things by hand. Joost shares Kiki's vision when it comes to the old and the handmade and is currently working with his "no glue, no screw" technique which forgoes traditional means of joinery and adhesion. His design philosophy is to make "contemporary versions of forgotten objects."

Together, their new collection is inspired by the basic materials and tools in their workshop. The new textiles (Connect, Stitch, Block, Score and Brush) are inspired by the different layering of wood, tape, string or paint. The chaise, which they originally designed for their own home, is available with an antique copper or brushed nickel finish. Look for them come November 2011.

Looking for the next fun piece to finish off your project? I am happy to introduce the Apel ottoman. Designed by Jessica Pell from the Art Center College of Design, the Apel elevates the simple round pouf by adding a distinctive stitch to a contoured profile. The ottoman is available in either a saddle stitch or the new loop master stitch, shown below. It comes in two sizes, a small individual ottoman, and a larger version meant for sharing. The small Apel is also available in a mobile version, perfect for quick meetings.

Forest for the Trees

Forest - Arik Levy

Just in time for fall, the recently released Forest bar stools direct our attention back to the trees. Designer Arik Levy sculpted this stool to resemble the detailing of a bare tree. Although the footrests may appear random at first, Levy varied the chrome bars to customize the height to the individual.

Atop the chrome base sits a swivel seat that is available in sold maple, walnut or upholstered finishes. Pricing starts at $450 list ea in COM. Fitting perfectly into both home, hospitality or retail...this is sure to find a home in your project.

Wanted to get in a quick preview of a few items from Bernhardt Design's showing at Neocon 2011. The US debut of Monica Forster's Vika was showcased in the front window of their 3rd floor showroom. Vika has already created a lot of attention here after it's fall introduction at the LDF in London. The demand for the optional white high gloss frame (not shown this year in Chicago) has made it a challenge to get your hands on one. I loved seeing the pieces done up in Kvadrat signature wools.

Not only did Bernhardt provide an overview of the wildly successful Art Center program, now in it's fifth year.... the students (some of them recent graduates) were on site to provide insight into their process and present their final products. Studio 4 featured multipurpose or "work" tables that were team efforts. The finished pieces, Story & Serif are both flip top pieces that round out the already extensive Bernhardt Table Gallery. For the most recent studio, the design brief was to provide "alternative seating" options to the Bernhardt line which expanded to include an occasional table as well. These items were previewed at both ICFF 2011 & Neocon 2011 and are scheduled to be formally added to the line in fall.

Bernhardt Textiles also previewed a collection coming out in late summer as well as their recent release of the Powerhouse Collection, which features 3 performance textile patterns. More to come on this later.

With LDF in full swing this week, I wanted to share a few videos of interest.The first is about Suzanne Trocmé and her role as curator for the London Design Festival. Suzanne has a range of her previously released pieces with Bernhardt. This year Bernhardt has presented several pieces along side 4 new lounge collections by Jaime Hayon, Monica Förster, Jephson Robb , Harry & Claudia Washington as well as showing Brad Ascalon's Neocon introduction Pillar.

Also Jerry Helling was interviewed at the start of LDF 2010. This is Bernhardt first showing at the London Design Festival.

Va Va Voom- Artist's Muse

Although Picasso refused to use Bardot as a model for his paintings, another Spanish artist/designer has been influenced by Brigitte for his latest masterpiece. Jaime Hayon's most recent project is a collection of lounge pieces for Bernhardt Design; appropriately named Bardot. This is Hayon's second collaboration with Bernhardt Design, with the first being a textile collection named Serious Fun designed with girlfriend, artist & photographer Nienke Klunder

Bardot's enticing curves were clearly well received during it's summer preview at this years Bernhardt booth for ICFF 2010.

Jaime's work for Baccarat, Lladro, Camper & Bisazza tile as well as so many others can be viewed on his extensive website. I've enjoyed reviewing the interior projects and installations he's worked on (Faberge, Camper, and La Terraza del Casino)....all are so transportive. Gives you an perspective of how Alice must have felt in Wonderland.

Road trips are the source of inspiration for Bernhardt Textiles Enroute Collection designed by Teri Figliuzzi and featured in Chicago this year at Neocon. Bernhardt was honored with a Silver Award at Neocon for Heathcare Textiles, which adds to their already strong success of Crypton's in their offering. These 4 performance textiles including Junction,Parkway, Transit, and Radar (a leather alternative not shown in the picture above). Whether it’s a short drive or a long excursion, patterns of pavement and expressways traveled are great visual resources for bold and graphic designs. Finished with Nano-Tex and acrylic backing, patterns Junction, Parkway and Transit are woven with solution-dyed nylon and polyester yarns. With Neocon 2010 around the corner....I wanted to provide a "trailer" of sorts for the Bernhardt Design launch in Chicago. If Siskel and Ebert were still around...they would have given the New York ICFF launch of Curio, Corvo & Pillar two thumbs up. In this double feature of sorts...the plot thickens. In addition to the launch of Curio, Corvo & Pillar...other features at Neocon will be the Levy stacker as well as several pieces not yet announced, but sure to see conference & multipurpose tables as a strong showing.

I've heard whispers that there is another Duchaufour-Lawrance piece as well as a Trocme' introduction. With Bernhardt's success with both Suzanne's & Noé's most recent intros...these are sure to get 5 out of 5 stars.

Spring is always an exciting time of year for designers...kicking off with manufacturers launches at Milan Furniture Fair, then rounding the bend at ICFF and the final stretch with intros in Chicago for Neocon. Focused on helping American product designers, both emerging and student, gain the exposure needed to kick start their careers.

Bringing sexy back

Anticipating this year's Salone del Mobile's Bernhardt Design introduction I'm posting an image of Noé Duchaufour-Lawrance's Corvo chair. Bernhardt's bringing the details of handmade furniture back to American design once again this year. Wallpaper has also just featured the chair in their 2010 preview for Salone. I think Noé has struck a balance of modernity with the history of handcrafted furniture. This solid Walnut piece is carved with 15 different hand tools...seems you really have to touch it to appreciate the true beauty of this piece. Look for more on this chair and Noé to be released soon...this is sure to be an editor's pick this year.

The Sectional as Sexy Sculpture

For some, the sectional sofa brings back bad memories of a giant glossy vinyl remote-control swallower circa 1982. Patrick Jouin’s Item, above, elegantly reimagines the often not-so-stylish sectional genre.

Mr. Jouin, a Paris-based designer, created a series of 10 free-form, angular components that vary in shape and height and undulate, rising and falling like pieces of sculpture. They can be combined in multiple ways — and you don’t need all 10 to make a sofa.

Inscape, with their introduction of Tisch in Summer 09 brings together a partnership with European powerhouse bene and their own great integration of quality storage based solutions to market in North America. Get inspired by the use of color and material with what appears to be a utilitarian table, but the options are endless. The Tisch platform is a kit of parts focused on integration with power and technology at the worksurface level...without the requirement of a panel based system. The sliding worksurface allows quick, but hidden access to all the goodies. Designers will love the kit of parts and height adjustable legs as well. So clever and flexible, it was also just awarded a GOOD DESIGN award and a Gold Innovation Award at IIDEX 2009. You can download typicals on Inscape's site (under their "Planning Tool" link) that are classified by product and then by application. Hitting newstands in December's issue of Interior Design magazine...is French superstar designer Patrick Jouin's modular lounge collection Item. Scouring the web for great info on his notable works, I found a great interview on Paris by Appointment Only. What I love about Item, is its ability to be a sculptural and architectural statement piece....letting the designer's imagination rule. But at the end of the day this "lego" set can be made into a simple loveseat or sofa. The options are endless...check out all the images online of just a few of the possible scenarios this piece has. Now that Bernhardt has uploaded the 3d symbols to their website, you can play with this series to suite the space.

The long wait is over

Bernhardt Design has completed the first phase of their project to provide drawing symbols of their furniture for designers use. The website now has links to the majority of their seating & occasional tables available for both 2d & 3d download. This is accessible from the product pages as well as the "drawing library" tab listed under the "other" tab. Their goal is to provide multipurpose & conference tables in the second phase....will keep you posted on that progress. So, for all you Revit, Sketchup and Autocad users...you can bookmark this as a new resource for accurate furniture symbols.

I've always the loved the show within a show concept...and NBC's 30 Rock has the writers and stars to back it up. Check out the most recent pic from the set of 30 Rock from the episode Problem Solvers (airdate November 12, 2009). Featured are Bernhardt Design's Balance Lounge pieces, designed by Jeffrey Bernett along with Fabion Baron's B.5 occasional tables. This behind the scenes shot shows Baldwin and Fey's characters on the "set" for her new endeavor as host of talkshow Dealbreakers. TV Guide's article on the episode also shows the set with Liz's possible replacement, Padma Lakshmi, host of Bravo's Top Chef and Alec Baldwin.

Boston....Hollywood East

Boston has the last few years been a hot spot of activity for film crews, and last summer both the streets of Boston & the North Shore were filled with activity following the filming of Sandra Bullock & Ryan Reynolds romantic comedy The Proposal. While much of the publicity last summer followed the drama surrounding the action of co-star Sandra Bullock's real life "Crash" up in Gloucester after a supposed drunk driver hit she and her husband Jessie James...I wanted to focus in on some of the furniture featured in the filming. The Calyx lounge pieces shown above were featured in Margaret's Office (Sandra Bullock's character) as well as the Ross Lovegrove Orbit chairs in zebrawood. Bullock & Reynolds can be seen in two of the shots of her office along with Suzanne Trocme's Affiliate & Forum chairs pictured in Tangelo leather.

The Boston Design Center has had been sought as a source for both production crews scouting out furniture for both residential and in this case commercial sets. And now with Plymouth Rock Studios proceeding with plans for a full scale movie studio here in Massachusetts, the Design Center will be a continued asset to production design staff.

Urban Oasis

This year at Neocon, Teri Figliuzzi of Bernhardt Textiles, introduced a simple collection of 3 pieces adding to her already extensive offering available for both COM usage as well as graded into Bernhardt Design's seating collection. Horizon, the Crypton in the triad...adds to the success of the existing Cryptons in the line (Wing, Bark, Stone, Shell and Verve) while providing a mid-scale wide stripe to the whole collection. Haven, a sustainable wool option, is a great neutral coordinate with one pop of classic red to the color offering. Rounding out the three is a moderately priced medium scale pattern with a wide range of colors in each colorway. I think, if you count, you'll find up to 9 fibers....but is is still relaxing to the eyes. To see the available colorways...select the links above for each pattern in the "Oasis Collection". Bernhardt Design's recent introduction of tables has been met with great success already. This long planned project of providing a comprehensive offering of conference and multipurpose tables was meant to stir up the standard "go-to" options for designers when looking for tables that can be used from breakroom to boardroom. Now, with a greater range of standard edge details, veneers and laminates as well as the option to incorporate "Customer's Own Material" for tops, Bernhardt Design is cornering the market. The tables are all designed upon a consistent platform of both technology integration and design, while offering a wide range of aesthetics and price points.

Tables featured above are Circuit, Parallax & Trace and shown with the Auxiliary Storage offerings as well. Parallax is shown with a COM top, showing the now standard capability of providing project specific details. Other tables rounding out this table gallery are listed below with their links.

Another great feature to the updated Bernhardt Design website is all the great detail images of the technology integration and access, which is a great communication tool with A/V professionals as well as the client. A Fresh Look to Discover; Bernhardt Design's Updated Website

Bernhardt Design has launched the first phase of it's new website, with great features sure to help make specifying a breeze. Their website has always been easy to navigate, but the new look provides more categorization of furniture types, direct links to pricing, Greenguard info and additional photos from each piece. One of my favorite new sections is the "Discover" tab....offering insight into the individual designers' worlds. It is easy after seeing other works by these talented designers why Jerry Helling, Creative Director and now President of Bernhardt Design would want to work with them.

"Discover" also links to recent articles (with full pdf downloads) from industry magazines...most recent is I.D. Magazine's Annual Review 2009 which features the Loft chair by Shelly Shelly on the front cover. What a great honor for both Shelly Shelly and Bernhardt Design.

With several requests in the past week from those who weren't able to attend Neocon this year, we are striving to pull together some of the post popular pieces together for the showroom here in Boston. In the coming month, we should have Calibra, Hyde, Allee & Sonar.

Calibra is available in two versions...Calibra & Calibra .02 designed by Claudia & Harry Washington, has a great leg detail as well as gorgeous stitching detail options for seat and back cushions.

Bernhardt has added another versatile stacker to our already available stacker chairs with Sonar. Available in Maple & Zebrano veneer as well as fully upholstered versions, there is sure to be an option to fit your application. Lievore Altherr Molina have had wide commercial success with past Global Edition pieces Aro & Celon. This piece rounds out there introductions with Bernhardt Design...I'm looking forward to any future collaboration they may have with this team out of Barcelona.

Allee shown above in a dark stain...is an armless wood chair from solid maple lumber. Suzanne's designs have been great additions to the line, and this is sure to follow suit.

Fredrickson Stallard's Hyde chair is shown above with white leather, but can be upholstered nicely in contrasting textiles or welt to really accentuate the sculptural qualities of the piece.

So, maybe you didn't make it out to Chicago this year for Neocon. I've got press images of individual pieces from the Bernhardt Design showroom. Brochures are making their way out to firms as we speak, so keep your eyes open for the wide range of seating and tables...most available for production now! Featured above on the upper panel are Parallax conference table with Sonar side chair, Allee' wood chair by Suzanne Trocme'. The center panel shows the Hyde lounge and a perfect pairing of Area side tables. Calibra lounge and Facet tables...and the Item modular lounge piece shown with Martini cocktail tables & Ross Lovegrove's Go chair round out the bottom panel.

Chicago: Neocon Preview Bernhardt Design

I'm sure that after the great fire in Chicago they would not have imagined how great the city would have turned around, rebuilt and become such a cultural gem for both America and the world. Proof is in Santiago Calatrava's great new Chicago Spire project. So, Neocon 09 is here! Time for rebuiliding....

Bernhardt, this year, pulled out the stops and is introducing an amazing range of table options. "You need a table, we've got a table." The table gallery includes recent introductions in the multipurpose category as well as cafe and high tops, but also 8 brand new conference table options including great storage options. My favorite in the auxiliary storage collection is the seating height upholstered bench option. Perfect for perimeter conference seating. The website and pricer will be revamped to include more information on the integration of av/power and data requirements. Richard Holbrook developed with Bernhardt an extensive product range as well as an integrated "Mediatrac" system for the tables. Parallax, Trace & Circuit are sure to be great additions. There is also the availability of COM (Customers Own Material) for conference and table tops.

So, if that wasn't enough....they are launching seating and occasional tables previewed at ICFF and Milan, which are new introductions to the existing Global Edition Collection.

Hope your plans include stopping by the Chicago showroom, 3rd floor on Monday through Wednesday to see the new pieces and meet with the designers who are always happy to answer questions on their new works.

Bernhardt Textiles has also introduced 3 new patterns (including a sustainable piece called Haven). Look for a specific post on this Oasis Collection by Teri Figliuzzi in the next week.

So I know this isn't a Bernhardt designer....but who in the world of furniture manufacturer's wouldn't have wanted to work with this man. He held out and kept to his craft and made truly one of a kind pieces. He is a true inspiration to a whole world of furniture designers and thought I would link to a post by another blogger Larry Weinberg for Interior Design. I've also included a link to Maloof's latest interview w/ NPR's "All Things Considered" April 22nd, 2008. They have the audio and great pics as well. Some of which I featured above by photographers Jonathan Pollack & Matt Blais. His recent passing, I'm sure, will reveal a whole new group of his followers. I think his innovation shows what American designers are capable of...although he truly raised the bar.

Metropolis.....Live @ ICFF features Bernhardt

Metropolis Magazine's online edition is posting live from ICFF in NY through this weekend and early next week. They have just posted their coverage of the Bernhardt Design space. Featured in their post are pics of the Suzanne Trocme's Allee' chair...but in painted colors, as well as my first glimpse of the Atlantic lounge chair designed by Valencia's CuldeSac...check out the fun contrasting piping on the seat cushion. I'm still awaiting images of the Patrick Jouin designed Item modular lounge collection for Bernhardt Design...which is sure to be a showstopper. Ready, Set, Milan

As the first official day of Salone is ending in Milan today, I figured I would add another sneak peak of Bernhardt Design's "New Works" being added to the Global Edition Collection. This piece, Hyde, by British duo Fredrickson Stallard, is a walnut and upholstered piece. I heard it described as a love child of Shelly Shelly's Loft and Parcano's Edge chair by a friend (shout out to KP in Chicago). Fredrickson Stallard have worked on projects for the likes of Iittala, Channel & Swarovski. Both Patrik Fredrickson & Ian Stallard are true artists in a range of "crafts" and after a look at their website you will see them delving deeply into their subject matter. Their commissions range from lighting fixtures, product displays and campaigns as well as sculpture and they have shown proficiency in a wide array of materials. Hyde will truely help round out the Global Edition collection in both its character and material. Also, check out this link to an article...has great photos from the Milan showroom of the Hyde chair. HansandFranz are here to (no really, it's not what you think)

HansandFranz, designers of the Cycle seating collection are featured as the cover story in the February 09 issue of onoffice Magazine. I'd like to share the link to the article....as real journalists, they seem to do a better job. Last year both Konstanin and Horst (the dynamic duo aptly named HansandFranz) were on the scene at Neocon...ready to answer questions from both design press, interior designers and architects....along with the other featured designers Jerry Helling (creative director) worked with to pull together Bernhardt's Global Edition Collection. You may have not gotten a straight answer on who is Hans and who is Franz, but they were surely willing to give insight on their design process and concept. Cycle is Greenguard certified and available in a range of sizes from small diameter to large oval.

One week and counting....Salone del Mobile 2009

Because I can't wait....I tried not to be sneaky, but I knew the Europeans would be getting all the great images and previews. I went online and did all my digging and research. So I've satiated my craving for the "new" and I'm nice enough to share, which I think is in my DNA. Today, I'll feature American designer Marc Thorpe's Area occasional table collection, that will debut at the Salone del Mobile in Milan starting April 22nd. To me, there is nothing occasional about this collection. Use one, use them all....walnut or painted. I love the collection of colors shown in the shot above, sophisticated...fresh, and optimistic. Thorpe of Third Eye Studios in NY has also designed Bernhardt's Facet table collection and Miura lounge introduced in 2008 at Neocon in Chicago.

Architectural Record features Chicago Showroom in latest issue

Lauren Rottet of Rottet Studio's design for Bernhardt Design's Chicago showroom was featured in an article in Architectural Record's latest issue (March 2009). The article explores some of the challenges her team faced in designing this space...since Bernhardt was working in half the space of their former showroom. If you pick up the issue, the floor plan is featured as well, which I always appreciate in reviewing these articles...giving the photos context. What's in ... the showroom

I thought it would helpful to provide a link to some of the latest pieces we've brought into the showroom. We've had a lot of interest in our newest multi-purpose conference and cafe tables....Edge & Vue which are both available in laminate and veneer options. The Edge tables are offered in a wide range of square to rectangular sizes and the Vue is available in round and square from 24"-42" with a bar height as well. The Vue in laminate..36" round w/ base lists under $1000. Jang won Yoon designed the Vue and Revue tables as a partnership with the Art Center College of Design and Bernhardt Design. He was selected as a participant in the 2009 ICFF Studio featuring product this year at ICFF, so look out for his new pieces this spring in NY. Edge was designed by London based PearsonLloyd, who designed Bernhardt's Outline casegood line as well as Coast from the Global Edition collection 2008 and Revolve Lamp. You will see the continuity in their design ...in reviewing their pieces. I particularly enjoy the contrast of both rectilinear and curvilinear principals in each design. Look for new introductions from this team in Milan this Spring.

Rockin' Trocme'

So...first things first. We love Suzanne! And she rocks...so here she is with another hit. Allee, an all wood side/guest chair being introduced at Milan Furniture Fair and ICFF. I'm not surprised by the simple beauty of the lines....both feminine and architectural. She plays with positive and negative space so well...you would think they were kindred spirits. Her book Attention to Detail (which is now being introduced in paperback will be available in July 09) is about her focus on designs that are lasting...and full of detail. Look for more of Suzanne pieces from Bernhardt Design in the future....while we are waiting, check out her other beautiful pieces Assembly, Affiliate, Caron, Coterie, Egalite', Forum, Guild, League, Shawl, Tribute, Union, & last but not least Zoe!

An Eye on the Future of the Workplace

Check out this interview with Editor Tyler Brule' of Monocle magazine focusing on Affairs, Business, Culture, Design and Editorials. This interview offers insight to the future of "the workplace" especially with the challenges industries are facing in trying to cut costs, especially in real estate. Tyler started Wallpaper magazine and is now on to work on this new pet project for Monocle. He has also found a way to introduce more textiles for Winkreative/Bernhardt Textiles collaboration Winkraft Series three. Check out the other branding work he has done for companies like Nokia, British Airways, BMW & Stella McCartney.

LEED ing the way.....

Always a hot button topic for today's designers is incorporating "green" and sustainable products into their projects. For those of you not familiar with the Greenguard website....they link to manufacturers' products that meet the indoor air quality standard required to contribute to LEED CI 4.5 Low Emitting Material points. Understanding this is only a piece....it is an important piece. Also, Bernhardt has an FSC chain of custody certificate (Forest Stewardship Council) that also can contribute toward Credit 7 for Certified wood if specified for casegoods & table projects. The other great contributing factor, is Bernhardt's focus on providing furniture designed to be "the next classics" and there for are sustainable in that they are not being replaced every 10 yrs. Check out the Global Edition pieces, which where designed for that very purpose. Shown here is the Remy swivel lounge designed by NY based Jeffrey Bernett of studio B. Zig Zag- part of the "Serious Fun" collection designed as a collaboration by Jaime Hayon & Nienke Klunder of Hayon Studio

Dash- bundles of fibers woven together to create a wonderful natural striation in this pattern

Prodigy-a great small scale pattern that reads as a solid...with a hint of warmth in the background, making it easy to use with natural woods and materials

Posh- a gorgeous heathered 100% Alpaca...another plush Teri design

Lustre- has a nice organic and linear appeal w/ a hint of metallic fiber....great neutrals as well as some "pop" colors in this pattern

I started this blog as a central place to keep all the great press images of new Bernhardt Design pieces as well as textiles. Most European countries have provided editorial on recent introductions over the past 5 years...and with creative director Jerry Helling's push to find the "next" hot designers both here in the US and abroad, I felt we needed a place to keep tabs on them. In addition, I wanted to have an open forum for what you are looking for in new pieces...what is missing in the marketplace and just general design critique. Enjoy!
